A key element to successful teams is remembering to take the time to celebrate successes along the way. Of course, you will want to recognize individual efforts along the way and also you’ll want to put an exclamation point at the end of big projects. Don’t forget though, to set up milestones and markers along the way to major goals and take time to celebrate those smaller movements toward achievement. Successful teams define what success will look like when they reach it. Then they recognize progress and the sprints along the way to completing the marathon.
Break and Track:
Have a way to track the components and building blocks that go into the larger goal. Break down the elements of the end results into smaller segments that you can then recognize as having been achieved. Allow the whole group to see their efforts and advancement toward the finish line. Whether it’s dollar amounts or percentages of your company’s key metrics, take the bigger vision and measure out achievable components. Establish check points whether biweekly, monthly or quarterly. Whatever makes sense for your team.
Stop and Cheer:
And when successful teams achieve milestones, they set aside recognition time at sales meetings, take a break from the routine and do a group outing, or schedule a team building event. Make sure you celebrate the little successes along the way. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a sales team, a customer service team, operations or even a faculty team at a school. We all have ways to define and measure success.
Successful teams achieve more because they are constantly tracking progress and celebrating along the way.
The end of the year is a great time to review all that you’ve achieved over the past 12 months, so you can see how many goals you’ve met as a team. Whether your fiscal year ends at the same time or not, you can still measure your advancement on various fronts. Keeping your eyes on the prize with a persistent focus on growth will give your team a performance advantage and will also lead to additional successes.
