Groups versus teams, is that even a thing?
It’s just a matter of ‘you say Potato I say potato You say Tomato I say Tomato,’ right?.
And even if there’s a difference, what’s the big deal?
It may be an issue of semantics, but in our world, words have power. So it’s a good thing, now and then, to clarify what you mean. We get to work with a lot of amazing groups and sometimes, we get to work with fantastic teams. And hopefully, we assist some of or parts of these groups transition into more effective, higher functioning teams.
“All teams are groups of individuals, but not all groups are teams.”

So what is the difference?
Groups versus teams
Groups
- Similar or shared interests
- Similar or shared affiliation
- Independent
- Informal or no structure
- Little or no accountability with group
- Little or no familiarity with other members
Teams
- Shared purpose
- Shared goals
- Interdependent
- Formal structure
- Accountability to team
- Familiarity with other members
Again, does this matter? Either, Either; Neither, neither. When bringing together a group from a company for a team building event, you might be trying to bolster the sense of group camaraderie. And you might be trying to build the relationships between the members and the various teams within the organization. It is okay to foster the ideals of teamwork and the shared objectives of the larger organization. Truly moving into strategic team building is a subtle shift.
